Have you heard of something called a toy library? Nope, it’s not a typo. And yes, Pune has a toy library! Let’s begin by understanding what exactly a toy library is? In terms of working, a toy library is exactly similar to a book library accept for the most vital detail. Instead of books, toys are exchanged (of course!).

Samiksha Agarwal, a Paediatric dentist in Pune, runs a cute toy library called ‘Kiddokin Toy Library’ out of her house. “A toy library works like a book library. There’s a membership where every week you can come in or we can deliver 1-3 toys and 2 books and next week you return them and take others,” says Samiksha. She also adds that the library has specially curated educational and developmental toys for ages 6 months to 10 years.

Kids, these days, are no longer interested in mere toys. They get tech savvy from a very and we mean very tender age. Tablets, smart phones and laptops are the new generation play-toys. Also, parents care less as buying toys look like a futile investment because children gain and lose interest in things, especially toys, pretty quickly. And buying new, shiny toys for your children, every now and then, is not an economically feasible idea. Hence a toy library!

The toy library run by Samiksha has a monthly membership of Rs 500. There is a Rs 1000 refundable deposit fee in case of any loss/damage to the toys. They also have something called ‘bank of toys’ under which you can exchange old toys for a membership of up to 3 months depending on the condition and the valuation of the toys. All of that is decided by the management of the library.

Every kid must play with toys or do things that are endearingly innocent and childlike. Glued to an electronic screen, your kid’s eyesight can go for a toss at a very early stage. Something to think about, eh? So, let’s return to the basics and encourage our young ones to play out on the ground with toys and friends.
