Known to be the only blackbuck sanctuary in Maharashtra and one of the only four in India, Rehekuri Blackbuck Sanctuary has wildlife enthusiasts swarming in it throughout the year.
black buckUnlike other wildlife sanctuaries that remind you of the Jungle Book, Rehekuri Blackbuck Sanctuary is actually a dry, barren scrub forest. Spread across an area of 14.87 km, the sanctuary is home to more than 6,000 blackblacks. Thus, catching a glimpse of this charismatic creature is quite easy, however, it’s only a few lucky ones who can spot them leaping (which is so high that it looks like it's flying) and jumping around with their pals. Watching these graceful creatures with spiraled antelopes and sharp features is truly a sight to behold. In fact, not many of you might know that you can easily differentiate the males from the females as it's the males who have long spiral horns which are used to impress the females.blackbuckBesides blackbucks, the sanctuary is also home to other animals such as wolves, Indian fox, chinkaras, Jackal, Langur, Mongoose etc. Earlier, the endangered, Great Indian Bustard also used to be a major crowd puller however, there has been no sighting of the bird since 2002. But don’t be disappointed as there are many other birds such as peafowl, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Cuckoo, Black Dongo, Tickell Blue Flycatcher etc that you can spot at this sanctuary.   If you wish to spend another day with the bucks then you can also stay at the government run forest guest house on the sanctuary boundary. So channel your wild side and head to this sanctuary already.
