Built in 1797, Khunya Murlidhar Temple situated in Sadashiv Peth is an ancient Krishna temple and a hidden gem in Pune that has been a home to devotees seeking tranquility dating back to the Maratha empire over 224 years. The story goes like, once upon a time a wealthy Peshwa money lender Ssadashiv Gadre dreamt of Murli-Lord Krishna and was instructed by Lord Krishna to build a temple. Ssadashiv, then invited a famous sculptor from Jaipur known as Bhakatram and asked him to create a magnificent Radha Krishna murthy. Peshwa Bajiro II instantly fell in love with the first sight of this marble idol and requested Dada Garde if he could take the idols. Ssadashiv denied Bajirao’s request and built this temple overnight. It is also said that Bajirao didn't take the refutation in good spirit and sent British soldiers to stop the making of the temple. Dada Garde was well prepared with his Arab defence to combat the soldiers and eventually won the battle. The making of this battle saw a lot of bloodshed right outside the temple and hence it was named Khunay (Khoon/blood) Murlidhar.
