Tikona Fort

Located near Pawna Lake, Tikona Fort is one of the most popular forts around Maharashtra. The fort is triangular in shape which is why it is called Tikona. Thanks to its easy trail, the fort is accessible by all and thus attracts amateur and seasoned trekkers alike. The fort is a green paradise and offers breathtaking views of the Sahyadris, especially during the monsoon which makes it one of the most popular trekking destinations in Maharashtra.

Lohagad Fort

Located just 63 kms from Pune, this fort was used by the great Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to keep his treasure. Unlike other fort treks, this fort has stone steps throughout its way, making it extremely easy to climb. Besides being surrounded by the emerald hills, the fort also promises an spectacular  view of the beautiful Pawna Lake and the Visapur Fort closeby. Entrancing view, fascinating history and easy treks, this fort truly has the complete package.

Korigad Fort

Situated in the green hamlet of Peth Shahpur, Korigad Fort is a spectacular fort that never got the attention that it deserves. Cradled at an altitude of 929 meters above the sea level, the fort offers the most mesmerising view of the Aamby Valley from the top. Come monsoon, the fort transforms itself into a step waterfall and makes for a magical trekking experience.  The fort holds a special place in the heart of those who are inclined towards spirituality as it has a beautiful temple of goddess Koraidevi along with several other small temples dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva. So while visiting, don’t forget to bow your head in front of the almighty and thank them for all you have got.

Tung Fort

Tung Fort is one of the popular and relatively difficult forts around Pune. Afterall, it is known as Kathingad Fort for being difficult to climb. Conical in shape, the fort boasts of strong and thick walls, steep staircases and several bastions too. Surrounded by the Pawna dam on three sides, the view from the fort is as panoramic as it gets. As much as the fort is known for its scenic beauty, the fort also has a fascinating history too. It was built by the rulers of the Adil Shahi Dynasty only to be later occupied by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Since then, the fort became a watchtower for the Maratha empire as it offers clear view of the Maval region of Pawna and Mulshi Valley.

Torna Fort

Just 2 hours away from Pune, Torna Fort needs no introduction amongst the trekking community. This medium to easy trek is also known as Prachandagad fort and its claim to fame is that it was the first fort captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1646 at a tender age of 16. Besides the view of the lush green Sahyadris, the trekkers also get to see the splendid view of Raigad, Rajgad, Purandar and Sinhagad Fort. And that’s not all. Rumours are that the fort is haunted and trekkers who have stayed overnight reveal that they have heard loud banging noises on the door, asking them to open up. With each passing minute, the sound would get louder. So if you are cray cray enough to stay there overnight do let us know if what we have heard is true cos we sure aren’t going anywhere near this fort at night.

Rohida Fort

Last but not the least we have Rohida Fort built in the Yadava era. The fort is surrounded by rich flora and fauna and as you climb up the fort, you will find a beautiful waterfall on your left. The trek also has mesmerising views of the farms, water dams and more. Even though there are no dense forests on the trek, you will get to walk through green meadows and small bushes. Once you reach the top of the fort, you will experience a strong breeze that will compel you to sing ‘Le jaaye jaane kahan hawayein hawayein’. The fort is in good condition and has several bastions too which are still strong and sturdy. Besides this, the fort also has a small Lord Ganesh temple and two lakes too. Everything about this fort is absolutely picturesque to say the least.

Narayangad Fort

Located just 80 kms from Pune, Narayangad fort is one of the lesser known forts in the state. The fort is quite secluded and ideal for amateur trekkers. The path to the pinnacle has wide steps which makes it an easy and non-exhaustive climb. The fort dates back to the Satavahana era and it is believed that since it is located at a higher altitude, the fort was used as a watch point for the Jinnat Paithan route. The fort also has a small temple of Hastamata and was supposedly built by Peshwa Shri Balaji Vishwanath between 1714 to 1720. Untainted by human touch, this fort is a must visit for all those of you if you do not shy away from exploring new places.
