One of the most recognisable landmarks in the city, the majestic Shaniwar Wada served as the seat of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire back in the 18th century. Originally built as a magnificent seven-storied structure by Bajirao Peshwa I in 1732, its top six storeys were irreparably damaged from an attack by the Britishers in 1818, followed by a massive fire ten years later. Despite that, its impressive buildings, beautiful gardens and grand armoured gates still stand today as a reminder of the rule of the Marathas in the region.
Its near 300-year history makes it a must-visit for those interested in the events of the past, and it’s also a haven for architecture enthusiasts. Those looking to spend a lazy afternoon with their favourite book also have the option of sitting for hours in its beautiful gardens. Thrill-seekers won’t be disappointed either, as Shaniwar Wada is considered to be one of the most haunted locations in the city!
