Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale

This one has to top our list of popular sweet shops in the city. As one of the oldest shops, Chitale Bandhu is almost synonymous with Pune. Right from their pedhes to bhakarwadis their stuff is of legends! During Ganesh Chaturthi, they offer a wide range of modaks right from fruity ones like Mango to Strawberry to classics like fried modaks to Mava, Chocolate and Kesari. We suggest you head there early on in the day as the stock runs out quickly.

Kaka Halwai Sweet Centre

Another prominent sweet shop in Pune, Kaka Halwai is known for their over the top offerings. Say what? This year for the auspicious festival celebrating Lord Ganesha, they have made a whopping 151 kg mava modak adorned with dry fruits and topped with another cute modak on top! Apart from this, they also have Chocolate, Mava, Pista, Kaju, Malai, Ukdiche and Mango to name a few. Now you’ll be able to enjoy the festivities in fervour! (forget that diet) Ganpati Bappa Morya!

Dadu’s Sweet Emporio

This sweet emporio is nothing short of a sweet lovers paradise! They house everything from pedhas to barfis to rasgullas and speciality sweets from different regions of India. But during Ganesh Utsav you need to head here for their Motichoor Modaks! Handmade, these modaks are made up of tiny pearls (which it literally translates to) and they sell around 30-40 kgs on a daily basis, yes they’re that popular! If you’re looking for a healthier option, look out for their Oats and Ragi modaks!

Hotel Shreyas 

This favourite Maharashtrian restaurant in Pune, located on Apte Road not only serves simple, home-style, yet delicious Maharashtrian fare (read thali) but they are also known for their famous Ukadiche Modaks. The soft, white pillowy sweet is stuffed with freshly grated coconut and jaggery and steamed until they’re soft. It’s best had hot with a generous drizzle of ghee on top! Yum, yum! And the cherry on top is that you can find ukadiche modaks all year round here!

Poona Guest House

One of Pune’s favourite snack and lunch spots, Poona Guest House is known for its delicious Maharashtrian thali that costs only Rs 150 and features all the prominent Maharashtrian dishes. During the 10-day Ganesh Utsav, their star attraction is the Ukadiche Modaks that they have been churning out for the past 84 years! They also sell frozen modaks that you can keep in the freezer for up to three months and enjoy the modaks whenever your heart desires, in the comforts of your own home.

Murthy’s 

This Ganesh Utsav, if you’re bored of the regular and traditional modaks and variety is what you’re after, then we suggest you hear to Murthy’s in Somwar Peth. This 82-year-old establishment has an insane variety of modaks like - Chocolate, Mango, Strawberry, Butterscotch, Mysore Pak, Gulab Jamun and even a Cake modak if it floats your boat. If you can’t choose one flavour then you can collate a box of 21 modaks for just Rs 120.

Joshi Sweets

This iconic sweet shop in the city has six outposts and offer a few varieties of modaks like Kesari and Malai! But be rest assured, their Ukadiche or steamed modaks are to die for! On average, they sell around 2.5 lakh modaks during Ganesh Utsav. The filling recipe has been passed down by the owner's mother and they have a special machine to churn out the sweets. Overall the modaks are not too sweet and with multiple branches, you can get your hands on them easily!
