After 3 Days Of Closure, Sinhagad Ghat And Fort Reopens But Landslides May Cause Sudden Shutdown!

Good news guys- the ghat route leading to the Sinhagad fort has been reopened for visitors. But hold on! Before you make phone calls to friends and plan a trip, it is imperative that you take the looming hazard into account.

With the long weekend approaching, some of us are perhaps planning trips to visit the ghats around the city. Although the weather has cleared up somewhat, we wouldn't recommend that you take the risk of driving up and down the valley areas especially if there’s a heavy downpour in the region.

A couple of weeks ago due to the torrential rainfall, the forest department and the state government had issued orders that all ghat roads would be shut down and no visitor would be allowed to linger around. A recent landslide caused the ghat to closed down completely for vehicles for three full days- Saturday, Sunday and Monday. But as the rain intensity diminished, the ghat path was again operational on Tuesday. However, visitors are requested to be VERY, VERY careful.

Also, the state forest department has warned that the ghat may close down for vehicles at any moment if the rain showers increase around the ghat and fort area. They have also cautioned against the possibility of fresh landslides at certain spots.

A senior official from the forest department said that the visibility is extremely low in the ghat section due to heavy pouring and the recent landslide has occurred at a new spot. He also added that there's a high possibility that vehicles can get stuck in case of sudden mudslides in the region.

So, we urge all you guys to avoid the ghats for some time and remain in the city this long weekend. We are sure you’ll find something less risky to do than galavanting in the valleys.
