Pune Is Home To A Secret Butterfly Garden That You Can Flutter To!

For all the nature and butterfly lovers out there, we just came across a small garden in Pune that is filled with colourful and beautiful butterflies that is one of Pune’s best-kept secrets.

Pune is blessed with many parks and some unique ones too like the Seven Wonders and Ahilyadevi Udyan but did you know that Pune has been keeping away a little park that is filled with colourful butterflies all along? We didn’t either. Situated near a canal is the 1.5-acre Papillon Butterfly Garden in the quiet part of Saharkargar Nagar. The name Papillion comes from French which means butterfly. Guarded by a huge gate, this butterfly garden houses more than 50 different species of butterflies. And not just that, the garden also sustains a bio-diverse population of insects and birds too!


Managed by the Pune Municipal Corporation, the garden has large tents made up of nets set up which helps in retaining the humidity of the place. The garden is filled with an array of floras too. Nectar flowers, trees and shrubs are all butterfly-friendly which help them lay eggs. Butterfly lovers can find plain tiger, eggfly, pierrots to the common jezebel butterflies fluttering around which is truly a visual treat to the eye. Throughout the park, you’ll find boards with information on butterflies, plants and breeding. To help increase awareness, there’s a small room where you can find more information about Pune’s indigenous species of butterflies.

The best time to visit the garden is early in the morning and it can take you anything from 30 mins to an hour as you take in all the information and watch the beautiful creatures in all its glory. It is open all throughout the year, monsoons are also a great time to visit as you can see the evolution of a butterfly from an egg to a caterpillar to an adult butterfly. So make sure you carry your cameras along with you to capture the beauty.
