Open Library Movement
A group of eight students have taken it upon themselves to turn Punekars into avid readers by setting up an open library at Jeet playground in Kothrud. Explaining the concept, Abhishek Awchar, a member of the Open Library Movement told WhatsHot Pune, “We have introduced this concept of open library in Pune not only to instil the habit of reading amongst the residents but also to motivate them to share. This is probably the only library in the city with free of cost 24 hour access to all. Anyone can come and borrow books from the rack and return it when they are done. We have put up a number on the shelf where the reader can inform us about the books they are taking.”  Currently, the library boasts of 200 books, but the plan is to add more depending on the donations and books the group receives.
Open Library Movement
The library functions of the concept of ‘for the people, by the people and of the people’ and thus the onus of maintaining the place also lies on the residents. The bookshelf has a collection of religious books, marathi and english novels, books for competitive exams and biographies. This is the first shelf under the wings of Open Library Movement and is known as  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The group aims to put up a whopping 100 open libraries by the end of the year 2020 and you too can also be a part of this beautiful initiative by donating and sharing your collection of books with the city folk.
