I don’t know how many times I have been stressed and screamed, ‘main to gaon jaa ke kheti baadi karugi, this city life is sucking the joy out of me’. But while I dream of open fields and laying under a mango tree, who has a farm to make this dream come true? Well, not anymore as I have found a fabulous new venture that can turn your plain Jane rooftop into a terrace farm in a snap.

Based out of Pune, My Homestead truly has a midas touch but with a difference, instead of gold, everything they touch turns green. Co-founded by Saleel Savarkar and his like-minded friends, My Homestead is an urban farming company that helps people convert their terraces into urban farms.

Whether you have a small terrace and balcony or a large backyard, this green venture can turn any open space into a verdant wonderland. The idea is to introduce city folks  to urban farming as a part of their life. By installing productive landscapes such as farms, fruit orchids, herb gardens etc, the good folks at  My Homestead are bringing people closer to nature one terrace at a time.

Besides installing the 'farms', they also have two kinds of urban farm kits to help you grow your produce independently, The Farm Hamper and The Farm Hamper + kits. The kits come with an informative brochure that is more like a farming handbook for dummies/beginners. Along with that, the kits also have gardening tools, 30 different vegetables and fruit seeds, pots in different sizes, organic fertilizers and more. These kits literally have everything that you can possibly need to grow a mini forest on your terrace. We think these kits make for a thoughtful gift too!

Saleel always found solace in nature and felt a strong connection for years but it was  during the lockdown when he started turning his terrace into a mini ecosystem. From shrubs and plants to even trees, his terrace is nothing short of a jungle so to speak.. Talking about his creation, Savarkar told Hindustan Times, “The idea was to give a sense of signature ‘Gharchi Baug’ a recollection of the bungalow garden which I had always heard from my grandparents and parents as a treasure they enjoyed through their childhood and growing years. We chose a selection of flowering plants, typically Indian flowers. Along with it we chose certain Ayurvedic herbs, kitchen herbs and some flowering trees that can grow in large pots. To fill the gaps and give a sense of evergreen, we chose certain minimal exotic flora like crotons and grass.” Savarkar firmly believes that while the lockdown had tremendous downside and businesses have suffered, the fact that it had taught people the essence of time and patience cannot be ignored.
So if you too want to escape the humdrum of bhagti daudti zindagi and switch to slow living, My Homestead is here at your service.
