Are You Still Going To These Overrated Places In Pune?

Every city will have really old establishments that have stood the test of time. Some of them are worth your while, but some used to be and over the years have lost their charm and quality. Where am I going with this? I’m talking about overrated restaurants, that people still love and feed into the hype, but are they still worth visiting? We’re gonna help you look at a few places that you can try instead of the hyped places.

Vaishali

vaishali

Vaishali is an institution and one restaurant that appeals to all ages, but gone are the days when Vaishali meant the best dosas in the city. Now it's nothing but mediocre and you’d end up visiting for nostalgia sake and the long lines don’t help either. Instead, you can head to Supriya in Camp and savour on their one-of-a-kind manager dosa, or head to Anna Idli or Wadeshwar for your fill of Udupi food.

Bedekar Tea Stall

bedekar misal

Arguably the most authentic Puneri misal joint in town, Bedekar Tea Stall has been around since the 1940s. It is sad to report that one of the pioneers of the typical Puneri misal, Bedekar Tea Stall has lost its touch. Its sweet taste and cramped seating have started deterring Punekars. But places like Ramnath Misal, Newale Misal or even Damodar P30 all prove to be better alternatives to Bedekar.

High Spirits

High Spirits at one point was the life of the city and one of the most happening bars in town. From cheap alcohol to extremely crowded spaces, this has given way to other bars and resto-pubs in the city to shine. Places like Elephant & Co., The Daily All Day and Swig are just a few options around Koregaon Park that look like really good alternatives.

Blue Nile

A lot would still argue that Blue Nile is one of the best places in the city to dine on Mughlai food (biryani to be specific) but guess again. Albeit at the time when Blue Nile opened, Pune lacked other restaurants who offered good Mughlai food. As the name lived on, sadly the quality of the food didn’t. With a gazillion new restaurant in the city, head to George Restaurant, Dorabjees And Sons, Cafe Goodluck to name a few for an unforgettable meal.

German Bakery Wunderbar

German Bakery will always be near and dear to any Punekars heart, but long gone are the days when they used to bake their bread in-house and how the whole place used to smell of apple pie. After the bomb blast, the place was renovated and the new management took over which came with a lot of changes. German Bakery today is a hipster place with a majority of the crowd being students. The old charm has completely fallen through and the food adequate. So if you’re looking to hit some of the must-try places and eateries in Pune, check out this link instead. You can pop into Cafe One O Eight, Chafa Cafe And Studios or even Zen Cafe, if you’re craving a good cup of Joe and really good organic fare to go with it.

Joshi Wadewale

joshi wadevale

This humble Maharashtrian snack is a favourite of all. How a simple bun stuffed with a fried ball of spiced potatoes with some chutney can be both filling and satisfying. One of Pune’s household names, Joshi Wadewale used to be a standalone shop in Shivajinagar and people used to line up to get their hands on it, but ever since they decided to branch out and franchise, the taste and quality completely fell through. In our opinion, S Kumar Wadewale and the iconic Garden Vada Pav in Camp are much better bets.

Hitebar

hitebar

Let’s settle the score once and for all! Hitebar shawarmas are not the real deal. They’ve taken the concept and given it a desi twist. They’ve been making it the same way for about two decades now. If you’re looking for Middle Eastern flavours, this shawarma isn’t for you. Kibbeh, Marrakesh or Seven dish out mean shawarmas that won’t burn a hole in your pocket!
