Our Favourite Vegetarian Thali Places In Pune

An ideal option for non-meat Tuesdays and Thursdays, these are our favourite thali options when we crave a satisfying, herbivorous plate! Ranging from Maharashtrian, Gujarati to Rajasthani, these restaurants will ensure that you have a filling meal.

Durvankur

Located in the older part of the city, Durvankur churns out great Maharashtrian fare. Dabbling in two types of thalis – the Regular and Sunday Special – their weekend special is an elaborate affair. On Sunday, you get three sabzis, rotis/bhakris, puris, dal, chutney, papad, dahi vada, masale bhaath, farsan, thalipeeth along with a sweet dish. Wholesome and value for money – this, however, isn’t the spot for a leisurely meal. The setting is simple and the waiting time is long, so it is recommended that you finish your home-style grub quickly and get going.
Price: Rs 300 for a thali; packed meals available for an extra Rs 30
Timings: Noon to 3.30 pm and 7 pm to 10.30 pm

Sukanta

Started in 2004, Sukanta gives you unlimited food (without any bickering) along with a multitude of options. While Maharashtrian dishes still remain a crowd favourite, they’ve spruced things up by adding popular Rajasthani, Gujarati and South Indian cuisine to the repertoire. In fact, don’t be surprised if you find you’re served a helping of pasta or pizza on your next outing. The two-storied restaurant features a host of seasonal specialities such as aam ras, sitaphal rabri, and strawberry rabri alongside their regular more than 22 dishes strong thali. They don’t entertain reservations, so be prepared to wait for at least an hour on weekends.

Asha Dining Hall

Another oldie but a goodie, this dining hall was established in 1949 to provide people simple, homely vegetarian meals. Like the other places on this list, the thali is their area of expertise. However, you can also order a few things like desserts, beverages and accompaniments a la carte. Focussing on fewer items that you can actually finish, the spread isn’t as elaborate as some of the others, but the taste doesn’t disappoint. A typical plate consists of three sabjis, rotis, dal, curd, solkadhi and rice.

Offering a full meal that includes dishes such as thalipeeth, aamti, masale bhaath and different bhaajis – you can eat like a king. Don’t miss out on their desserts, which you have to order separately, especially signatures such as puran poli with warm milk, ukadiche modak, doodhi halwa and moong halwa. The pure vegetarian eatery also serves a Jain and Upvas menu apart from daily tiffin meals.

Rajdhani

One of the most popular thali chains in the country, Rajdhani has two outlets in the city - both in malls. The ambience at both the locations focuses on being simple, comfortable and clean with speedy service. Primarily known for their vegetarian thali, they also do specials like a vrat thali, mango-specials or a Diwali menu. No sooner than you sip your chhaas, appears a volley of waiters with their rounds of dhokla, pickles, papads and then the subzis, rotis, piping hot dals, farsaans, salad, chutneys, rice, khichdi and sweets. Some of the stellar dishes include the authentic Daal Bhaati Churma and the unputdownable Mutter Karanji. Though they started with Gujrati dishes, the menu also sees inclusions from Rajasthan, Maharashtra, North Indian, South Indian and Kathiawadi dishes and some off-the-radar fusions like dholka pizzas.

Primarily serving Gujarati and Rajasthani dishes (with some Punjabi dishes thrown in the mix), head here for wholesome and tasty vegetarian thali. On weekends, they also serve specialities like Dal Bati Churma. Make sure you keep your day free after a meal here; you might need it for a short nap.
