Scale New Heights At These Lesser-Known Hiking Spots In Nashik

If you’re an avid hiker or looking for lesser-known peaks and forts to ascend in and around Nashik. So start scaling new heights!

Hargad Fort

Located in the Baglan area of Nashik, there are two parallel ranges- Dolbari and Selbari. Situated on the Selbari range, Hargad is a popular spot for hiking for those who love to scale new heights. A cave with a temple of goddess Kapaar Bhavani can be found on the plateau during the fort-walk. The hike is of medium intensity and takes around two hours to reach the apex. There are no food or water stalls on the way or on top, so carry water and more snacks with you on the climb. 

Nhavigad Fort

Nhavagad, also known as Ratangad is quite an exciting climb for avid hikers. Known for its tedious ascent, the fort has a narrow apex, almost like a pinnacle and you need to climb some very steep verticles. There are two ways to go to the rock steps. The first one is a straight way towards the top point, bit steep and tough ascent and the second one turns around the pinnacle and reaches the steps. Account for around three hours for the climb and descend. 

Mulher Fort

The five km hike from the base village of Mulher is a medium grade climb that even a novice can accomplish. This is one of the more popular hiking spots in Nashik. The fort is also laced in history with stories and battles going back centuries to the Puranas that has the fort mentioned in parts. The fort is divided into two parts - Mulher Machi (flat plateau) ad Bale-Killa (citadel). You’ll find some temples, water tanks and a few caves too, where you can make a pit stop and get some respite from the sun. a lot of overnight camping also takes place. 

Indrai Fort

Located 75 km away from Nashik, Indrai or Indragiri Fort is a lesser-known fort for hikers and trekkers. What’s interesting is that in Chandwad taluka, there are four forts that are placed in a line on the Satmal Hill Range. Chandwad, Indrai, Rajdher and Koldher Fort. the path goes through a dense scrubs. A good tip is to take some advice from a local guide from the base village. There are a 10 rock-cut caves on top the fort which is perfect for an overnight trek-cum-camping site. 

Pisola Fort

Located a little further away from Nashik, around 125 km (hello, road trip). Pisola Fort is part of the Galna Hill Range. Dermal, Kankrala and Galna Fort can also be found in line and this one easy to hike even for beginners. It can take around one hour to reach the top. The only structure in good condition is a small mosque on the western edge of the fort. The rock-cut arch-gate of the pleasure palace of Rang Mahal stands in good condition with all its walls fallen to ruins. 

WH Tip: While trekking, wear good shoes, carry lots of water and snacks. Do carry a cap and wear tonnes of sunscreen!
