There are times when something as simple as the dal khichdi can do which all the fancy Sushi plates or rich Butter Chicken cannot. But does every one of you get the kind of khichdi your mother used to cook up here in the city? Khichdi is a type of soul food that brings relief during upset tummy or when one isn’t keeping well. But this place in Kharadi is whipping up exotic varieties of khichdi which you’d want to eat whether you’re sick or not!

Enter- Khichadiwala, a place, as the name suggests, dishes out khichdi only. It’s basically a takeaway joint with only two tables to dine in. So, what’s new? Well, the menu is an extensive saga on various possible khichdis one can come up with! Aside of the usual ones- Masala Khichdi, Moong Dal Khichdi, Mix-veg Khichdi and Sabudana Khichdi, there are some very unique khichdi options such as Corn-Spinach, Tomato-Spinach and Butter-Masala.

But the most striking choice was the Italian Khichdi. Cooked in loads of cheese and Italian herbs, this dish is the desi version of the Risotto, only cheesier. We tried this and it was heavenly! Every portion comes with papad, a small sachet of mango pickle and coated fennel seeds to remedy the aftertaste. For those who like to go Jackie Chan with spiciness, try the Saoji Khichdi. It’s super hot! There are a few Indian beverages such as Jaljeera, Mango Lassi, Chaas and add-on options like butter, ghee, raita, kadhi and others too.

Khichadiwala is a much-needed, even a long due prayer answered for us, the bachelors, who live away from home and miss the simple joys of home-cooked food.
