You most certainly would have heard about all the incredible forts that Maharashtra has to offer but did you know that many of these glorious forts are actually twin forts? These forts either have a little history in common or have some uncanny similarities in the structure that bring them closer together.

Chandan-Vandan Fort

Located in Satara, these forts were built in the late 12th century and are quite popular amongst trekkers. It’s an intriguing fort with immense historic value and grand architecture. The fort has two bastions at the entrance gate of Chandan Fort which is currently in a half-demolished state. While Vandan Fort is in a better condition in comparison and the old stone and Persian Inscriptions on the arch make it even more alluring. One day is enough to visit both the forts so don’t miss out on either.

Nimgiri - Hanumantgad Fort

These twin forts are separated by a cleft in the Junnar region. A trek to this set of forts promises you a spectacular view as you walk through the paddy fields and enjoy the rustic charms of Kalubai Temple and Lord Hanuman Temple. There are about 40 war memorials placed right behind the temple which you must visit along with a small cave situated right between the two forts.

Purandar - Vajragad Fort

First and foremost, even though Purandar and Vajragad are twin forts you can only visit Purandar Fort because Vajragad Fort is sadly closed for public. Once upon a time, Purandar belonged to the Yadava Dynasty and the Persians defeated the Yadavas and built the Purandar Fort. There is an ancient church constructed by the British and a Shiv Temple that you must visit. Don’t forget that cameras and mobiles are strictly prohibited on the forts and make sure you carry your ID proofs as the area comes under the Indian Army. Its always better to be safe than sorry right?

Tung - Tikona Fort

Rev up your motorbikes and get ready for the best biking trips you can ever ask for. Tung Fort is situated at an elevation of 1075 m so you can imagine the magnificent view from the top. The twin forts can be scaled in a day but don’t underestimate its difficulty level because it can get pretty exhausting. While you are trekking over to the Tikona Fort which is also known as the Triangle Fort where you can enjoy the vast views of the Pawana Lake from the top.

Shrivardhangad - Manoranjangad Fort

These twin forts are situated at Rajmachi and since both can be climbed in one trek since they aren’t very high. Manoranjangad castle has an ancient pond and a house on the top which is worth a visit. Shrivardhangad has an alluring rustic charm to it which can earn you some good pictures if you have the skills for it. Both the forts are in good condition and that’s why it sees a lot of tourists all year long. The best part about this trip is that one can also experience a homestay at Rajmachi village at dirt-cheap prices and savour some authentic Maharashtrian food too!
