But did you know that there are a few ‘women-only’ temples in the country that do not allow men to enter the premises? That’s right people, these six temples in India do not allow men at all.

Attukal Bhagavathy Temple 

temples for womenLocated in a small town called Attukal in Kerala, Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, is a shrine to Goddess Bhadrakali, that is also known as the goddess of prosperity and salvation. It is said that the goddess killed the demon king Daruka who was believed to be born from the third eye of lord Shiva. However, you will be amazed to know that men are not allowed to men are not allowed to enter this temple. Each year, the temple organises a festival called Attukal Pongala festival between February to March which is attended by a large gathering of over three million women which has even made it to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Chakkulathukavu Temple

temples for womenYet another temple in Kerala, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi where men are not allowed to step inside during a specific time of the year. Every year, on the first Friday of December, an annual ritual called ‘Naari Puja’ is organised in which male priests wash the feet of women devotees who had been fasting for 10 days. The day is called Dhanu and on this day only women are allowed to enter the temple. This fascinating temple sees a crowd of lakhs of women devotees each year during the festival. 

Brahmaji Temple 

temples for womenA 14th century temple in a small town of Rajasthan, Brahmaji Temple of Pushkar has a huge following. The temple is known to be one of the three Brahma temples in India. Not many of you might know that the temple does not permit men inside the premises and the reason is absolutely mind blowing. Legend has it that Lord Brahma married Goddess Gayatri here. Due to this Goddess Saraswati cursed the temple and said that ‘no married man must enter the sanctum of this temple otherwise he will face problems in his married life.’ Since that day, men have been prohibited to enter the temple.

Mata Temple 

temples for womenNext on our list is the Mata Temple of Muzaffarpur, Bihar that restricts the males from entering the premises during a specific time of the year. It is believed that the deity which is worshipped in the temple is menstruating during this time and thus only women devotees can enter the premises. The rules of this temple are so strict that even the male priests are not allowed to step foot inside the temple during this time. For this particular time frame the temple becomes a women’s only religious spot.

Kamakhya 

temples for womenJust like Mata temple of Muzaffarpur, Kamakhya temple of Guwahati also turns out of bounds for the male devotees for five days each month. During these five days only women are allowed to serve the temple. Infact, the menstrual cloth of Maa Sati which is considered sacred is distributed amongst the devotees too. Also, as per the Kalika Purana, the temple is the spot where Sati’s yoni fell after lord Shiva danced with the corpse of Sati. Fascinating much, wouldn’t you say?

Kumari Amman Temple 

kumariWe have bet you have heard about the story about  Mata Parvati's tapasya to earn the love of Lord Shiva and marry him. Well, Kumari Amman Temple in Kanyakumari is believed to be the place where the goddess did her tapasya. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple has a shrine of Maa Bhagwati Durga inside and only women folks are allowed to worship her. However, only celibate men are allowed to till the gate of the temple while married men are strictly barred from entering the place.
