Getting a driver's licence at the age of 18 is a right of passage. We all have to go to driving school, learn the theory for the dreaded driving test, where even the smallest mistake can cost you! With sweaty hands, you need to sit next to an official who will dictate the fate of your driving future. Well, if you hate the above process, we have some good news for you! The Union Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways amended the rule so that now you can get your hands on your licence in an easier manner. Now applicants will be provided with high-quality driving courses and once they've cleared those tests they will get their licence. Simple, right? Bye-bye driving tests!

The format revolves around training centres that will be equipped with simulators and a dedicated driving test track for high-quality training. The duration of the light motor vehicle course is structured around 29 hours within the span of maximum four weeks from the date of commencement of the course. The course will be divided into theory and practice. On the other hand, the duration for medium and heavy motor vehicle driving courses in the training centres is 38 hours in the span of six weeks. The course will also include the basics about ethical and courteous behaviour with other drivers on the road.

Apart from light and medium, the centre also plans to provide heavy motors vehicles as well as industry-specific specialised training. This is done with the aim to fulfil the shortage of skilled drivers on the road. The accreditation granted from the driving training centres will be valid for the duration of five years and can be renewed. This move comes because the ministry feels that the lack of proper knowledge and competency is considered to be the main reason for road accidents and obviously due to the lack of regulations.
