Part of the Smart City project, Pune is soon going to get it's very own cultural space inspired by the iconic Dilli Haat. Pu La Deshpande Park, also known as Pune Okayama Friendship Garden is all set for a new addition. Kalagram, is going to be Pune’s first cultural space where artists can not only sell their regional handcrafted products, but ongoing workshops will also allow citizens to partake and learn a new art. The entire project is estimated to cost anything between Rs 10 to Rs 11 crore.

The space will be designed by Architect Shobha Bhopatkar and will be built in a way to incorporate spaces to carry out workshops, stalls where artisans will be able to retail their craft as well as an open space where cultural art like dance, music and theatre skits will be performed for an audience. That’s not all, there will also be a food court area where people can get their fill of regional food from different parts of India.

The objective of this cultural space is to allow artisans to showcase their art and their products and to encourage Punekars to participate and support local artists. Think of Kantha embroidery sarees from West Bengal, Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees from Madhya Pradesh, Banarasi weaves from Uttar Pradesh and the beautiful linen sarees from West Bengal. From simple silver jewellery to tribal dhokra jewellery from Odisha, to blown glass amulets and ear-rings and stalls selling beads jewellery. You’ll also be able to find clay workers from Uttar Pradesh selling lovely glazed plates to serving bowls and from kettles and teapots to beer mugs with Indian motifs to look forward to. Though there is no definitive date as to when the space will be up and running, we’re really excited no less.
