After a prolonged illness, veteran actor Dilip Kumar passed away yesterday. Born in Peshawar, before he became the enigma that he was, the actor shared a wonderful connection with aamche Pune! Let’s start with something really interesting, the late actor earned his very first income right here in Pune? It was back in 1940, when the actor had some differences with his father and decided to come to Pune and that’s when he set up a stall selling sandwiches outside Army Canteen in Camp, earning his very first 100 rupees. It is believed that his friend, the legendary Raj Kapoor used to also visit the sandwich stall whenever he was in town.

After Dilip Kumar saved up around Rs 5,000, he decided to return back to Mumbai and the rest they say is history but we’re sure that nobody forgets their first income and hopefully, Pune will always be a special place. The connection to Pune runs much deeper. Another instance is when a die-hard fan, Khurshid Hussain Nagarwala, made a career for himself after using Dilip Kumar’s films. “I have been a very big fan of Dilip Kumar from the beginning. I used to travel to Mumbai to watch his movies. I started a paint business and decided to name the brands of my factory after his films,” said Nagarwala. He named his two paint brands Kohinoor and the paints were named Kranti, Shakti, Leader, Gopi and Vidhata and so on even before he had met the legendary actor. After a brief acquaintance, they became close friends so much so that Dilip Kumar even laid the foundation stone at one of his paint factories in Yeolewadi in 1997. Now, that’s a solid bond.
