Kick The Butt And Help The Environment At The Same Time With The Butt Ballot

As the pollution increases day by day, there are double the efforts put in to clean up our environs. Three city-based individuals are out to make Pune a butt free place by collecting, recycling and upcycling cigarette butts. Say hello to Butt Ballot, a small initiative to clean up the city.

Did you know that a cigarette butt is an environmental hazard? The butt takes roughly 12 to 13 years to degrade, and it still does not degrade completely? During this time they release harmful toxins that leach into our water and landfills. 

Three young city-based entrepreneurs have taken matters in their own hands and are driven to recycle cigarette butts in the city in a fun and engaging concept. How can you contribute?  It’s very simple, all you have to do is answer a question that is on the ballot. How do you answer the question? Simple, stub your cigarette and chuck it in the box with your answer. There is no right and wrong answers so don’t break a sweat! This not only makes the collection of the cigarette butts easier, it also helps educate and spread awareness. The questions keep changing within two to four days.

Once the butts are collected, they’re sent to a recycling company in Delhi to transform this hazardous waste into compost powder that is then up-cycled by using it in products such as cushions, mattresses and key chains amongst others. You can find the ballot boxes propped up at High Spirits, Creaticity, Tales & Spirits, Balewadi, Aufside, Robust and Mr. Rabbit for now. They do plan to diversify and prop ballot boxes all across the city.

Now that you know the cigarette bud contains plastic, and we all know about the plastic ban underway in Maharashtra, we see no better way to kick that butt and help the environment at the same time. Do your bit!
