This 14 Century Fort In Maharashtra Built Over A Dam And Has Waterfalls Within The Compound!

Maharashtra has a series of forts that have been built centuries ago to ward off enemies. We came across an impregnable fort in Osmanabad district, ahead of Solapur that is not only an architectural wonder but is also a great spot for history buffs to admire! Keep reading to know what makes this fort special.

Naldurg Fort

This historic fort in Naldurg town of Osmanabad district is considered to be one of the best forts that have been built with high military and engineering standards. It is believed that the fort was built during the Kalyani Chalukyan period and was later taken over by the Bahmani Dynasty. It wasn’t until the late 14th century when Ibrahim Adil Shah II took over the fort and increased its defence as to what it is today! It took them almost 15 years to rebuild the fort. Naldurg Fort along with Murud-Janjira Sea Fort in Raigad district and the Rajgad Hill Fort, form the holy trinity of forts in the state. The fort has an enclosed surface of knoll or plantain of basalt rocks and is fortified on all three sides.

As one of the strongest and impregnable forts of Deccan, this fort is a mini township in itself. The fort has a number of solid bastions (114 to be exact) of different styles and dimensions. One of the brilliant ingenuity is that the fort is built on a dam that was built with solid stone masonry in 1613 on the Bori River. The dam is 90 feet high and 31 meters wide. The river runs over the crest of the dam and the waterfalls into the pool. During monsoons, it turns into waterfalls and is a major tourist attraction. In the centre of the dam, there is a flight of steps that leads you to a beautifully ornamented room called the Pani Mahal which is one of the star features of the fort. The room has an artistically designed balcony where you can view the beautiful waterfalls in all its glory. This one-of-a-kind phenomenon is a sight to behold!

You must visit Naldurg Fort to witness its sheer architectural grandeur. Several migratory birds are spotted near the lake, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching. There aren’t any eateries or restaurants near the fort; so carry your own food and water but remember not to litter such a historic place! So, plan your next holiday around this magnificent fort and we promise you will not regret it!
