Standing Tall Since 1893, The Iconic BMC Building Has A Rich History

You walk out of the CST station and what’s the first thing you see? That’s right, it’s the magnificent structure on the opposite side of the road, the BMC building! The Mumbai Municipal Corporation Building is one of the most iconic heritage buildings defining the skyline and representing the rich history of Amchi Mumbai.

Still standing tall after over a century of its existence; the foundation stone of the building was laid in 1884 while the construction was completed in 1893.The architects debated between the two proposed designs; one Gothic and one Indo-Saracenic; the structure was finally built using a blend of Venetian Gothic and Indo-Saracenic architecture.

Complete with intricately carved arches, winged allegorical figurines and a stunning main tower; the structure is a vision to behold even today. Considering its legacy, the BMC building has been characterized as a Grade â…¡A heritage structure by The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee.

The BMC building is home to the civic body that governs the city of Mumbai and some suburbs. Spectacular and steeped in history; this building is a must see sight for every traveller who wants to get a taste of the city’s rich heritage.

Every Independence Day and Republic Day, the building is lit up with the colours of the Indian Flag and it is a wonderful sight to behold. The building is the subject of many photos and is a constant on the insta feed of Mumbaikars.
