Craving for a hearty South Indian breakfast in the city? Matunga is the obvious answer isn’t it? Here’s a list of our favourites from the Matunga South Indian food scene. Go ahead give each of these a try and tell us which one's your favourite.

1. Cafe Madras

CAFE MADRAS

Without a doubt the most popular name on this list and with many awards to boot; Cafe Madras is our favourite pick when it comes to authentic South Indian fare. They serve all the usual Idlis, Dosas, Uttapams along with a unique variety of rice preparations and sweets including the ever-so-good pineapple sheera. And to top it all, the filter coffee here is simply out of this world and probably the most authentic version of it you can find. Pop in a melt-in-your-mouth paan before you head out or buy ready-to make filter coffee decoction or banana chips from their store; this cafe is an absolute must-visit!

2. Shree Sunders

SHREE SUNDERS

Shree Sunders serves you an interesting mix of authentic South dishes along with some creative versions of them. We equally adored their piping hot Rasam Vada and their creative and quirky spring dosa (dosa with a veggie stuffing). They serve you a mind-blowing selection of idlis and dosas including the Kanchipuram, Kodagu and Mooda idlis and Pesarattu, Chettinad and Nachni dosas. If you’re not a fan of South Indian, they even offer a variety of options from other cuisines including Pav Bhaji and Misal. The servers are friendly and they will not let you leave unless you are completely stuffed.

3. Ayyappan Idli Stall

AIYYAPPAN IDLI STALL

The perfect place to grab a quick, on-the-go and easy-on-your-pocket breakfast is Ayyappan Idli Stall. The place is very basic with just enough space to stand and eat, but the taste compensates for its lack of a fancy seating area. We loved their idli-vada-sambar combo and totally recommend it for your first visit here. But if you’re craving for something fancier, then try out their chinese/pizza uthappams and dosas; and you won’t be disappointed.

Dishing out delicious meals as well as light bites such as upma and sheera, Mani’s is a must-try restaurant in Matunga.
