For all those who do not know what a ‘RoRo’ service is, then we are telling you. it is a vessel that can easily accommodate cars, buses, and passengers simultaneously! The vessel will nearly cost a whopping Rs 50 crores, which will be bought from Greece and will start functioning after the agreement for the same is signed.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) which is the stem of the project has initiated processes for the hovercraft service linking Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai which is again expected to be effective by January 2020 and the ‘RoRo’ service towards will be operational by December 2019.

According to the MMB senior officials, the draft has been prepared. Now all that is needed is the vessels to reach asap. The chief executive of MMB established an agreement with MbPt (Mumbai Port Trust) for using Ferry wharf which will be hitched too. The terminals will be built at Ferry Wharf, Mandwa in Raigad district and Nerul in Navi Mumbai.

The plan is to instate one ship in the beginning and after it reaches 70% capacity the vessel will be positioned.

These vessels can carry buses, cars, and travellers at the same time.

As for the hovercrafts, Dr Ramaswamy N, chief executive officer (CEO), MMB, mentioned that the Letter Of Intent (LOI) has already been provisioned connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai which will further be extended towards Thane in the second part. The operators will install two vessels initially and will then increase it to four. The hovercrafts will be escorted from Russia.

The RoRo vessel will make sure that the commuters reach from Nerul to Ferry Wharf in 35 minutes and Ferry Wharf to Mandwa in 20 minutes. It usually takes about four hours to complete that journey now. They have plans to connect that to Goa too. (Yess, we are excited too). This will not only help save time but also save money too compared to the long road commutes. We know you can’t wait for this to begin! Nor can we!
