21-YO Mumbai Kid’s Beach Clean-Up Drive Got UN’s Attention And Should Have Yours Too!

Mumbai and its beaches are something we all love. But how many times can you take off that footwear and walk on the sand barefoot without being icked out by the filth that lies of the shore? We are sure, NEVER! But all thanks to this 21-year-old kid and his friends, we are closer to doing that.

Meet Malhar Kalambe, a young lad who along with his initiative Beach Please, has been cleaning Mumbai one beach at a time. After his successful Dadar beach clean-up, he has set eyes on cleaning Mahim’s Mithi river – the one river clean-up that sees no volunteers.

He started the drive in September 2017 and ever-since then has dedicated his weekends to cleaning Mumbai. His efforts have been recognised by the UN, after he was awarded in December 2018.

How did it all start? Well, after a trip to Bali in 2017, Malhar couldn’t help but wow at Bali’s pristine beaches and feel sad for Mumbai ones. Hence, he and his friends took matters in their own hands and started cleaning the city.

He told Indiatimes, “Awareness, recycling and cleaning up are three steps which can bring a change which is long lasting impact. As a result, we have started awareness programme that people don’t dump garbage in nallas and the river apart from the regular cleaning we are doing every week. I hope people realise that it’s their duty to keep their surrounding as well as the their ocean clean.”

Now don’t we need more people like him? While he has got UN’s attention, his initiative should have yours too. If you are interested in helping them out, follow their Facebook and Instagram for weekly drives. Or reach out to Malhar on Twitter.
