In The Middle Of Dense Forest Lies This British-Era Dam That Should Be On Your Next Getaway List

Maharashtra has so many hidden gems, and we love uncovering them. And we chanced upon a beautiful lake in the middle of the jungle. Located in Chandrapur district that is known for the Tadoba Tiger Reserve, Ghorazari Dam is on our next getaway list. It should be on yours too.

The Ghorazari Dam (Ghodazari Dam or Ghoda Jhari Dam) was built as part of the Irrigation Projects by the Britishers in 1923, during the British Raj. The dam is built on Gorazari River and is an earth fill dam. Surrounded by dense forest, lush greenery and in the midst of abundant nature, this dam’s beauty is unmatched.

The length of the dam is 731.7 m and its height is 23.55 m. The lake that forms there is called Ghorazari Lake and is too scenic. The beautiful waters facilitate boating and it is quite a hit amongst couples. The location is also perfect and much loved by trekkers who come here for nature trails, camping and walking in the wilderness. There is a garden right next to the lake, and after paying a small entry fee, one can enter. It is through the garden, you can access the boating area.

During the monsoon season, the beauty of the place increases tenfold. Locals and tourists come here to watch the dam overflow which makes the sight extremely pretty. This is a low-key tourist spot at the moment, but it has all the makings of becoming a supremely popular getaway destination.


There is a pretty picturesque restaurant called Lake View Restaurant here that offers a panoramic view of the lake. Meal with a view, anyone? People come here to enjoy a lovely meal overlooking the calm waters and to be surrounded by nature. Sunsets here are special. If the beauty of the place arrests you a lot, you can even stay at a British-era rest house which is located nearby and there is also a private resort called Ghodajari Jungle Resort.

It is perfect for a quick getaway or if you are on your way to Tadoba Tiger Reserve or Nagpur. You can have a small picnic here, but do remember to take your trash back with you.
Getting there: Ghodazari lake is located in Chandrapur district’s Nagbhid Tehsil. It is about 6 km away from the main Nagpur-Chandrapur Highway. It is 106 km away from Chandrapur city and 97 km away from Nagpur. It is well-connected via road. And regular state buses and private buses ply from other cities in the state to here. The nearest rail head is Chandrapur.
