IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall In Mumbai, City On Red Alert. Here's What All Happened On Monday!

The horrors of July 1 were re-lived by Mumbaikars on July 8. Maddening Monday as we are calling it. With Sunday showers not being alarming to say the least, it all came down on Monday. Within a few hours, hell broke loose and many parts of the Maximum City were flooded, roads were congested, cars were floating, and flight operations were affected too.

Today, the Indian Meteorological Department sent out a prediction that they city is going to receive heavy to very heavy showers in the next few days. The prediction is that of intermittent showers and that’s going to continue. On Monday, the rains recorded were 84% of July’s average rainfall, i.e.708.7 mm. According to a Times of India report, since June the city has recorded over 57% of the average monsoon showers we get during the season.

Following the met department’s prediction, the Commissioner of Mumbai Police issued a tweet warning saying that in the next 24 hours the rains are going to be really heavy so Mumbaikars should take precautions and ensure their safety.

And we sure would. But what happened on Monday that it earns its name? Well, let’s do a recount.

1. Without any prior prediction and warning the skies poured down hard. The early morning showers 9 am onwards were heavy enough to flood the city. That’s peak office hours and people were already on the streets on their way to work. Suddenly, the roads were congested due to water-logging at the city’s prominent signals. Office areas in Lower Parel, Andheri, Kurla, Bandra were all turned into a big swimming pool. People were traff**ked and stuck inside vehicles that were moving at snail speed. Due to repair work and also ongoing metro construction work, the roads have become narrower and options quite limited.

Like thousands of Mumbaikars, yours truly was also stuck. I had set out from Andheri West at around 9.30 am and till 10.35 am couldn’t get out of the Juhu area. SV Road was congested, Linking Road was congested, Barfiwala Flyover was close to us, but were lost in the sea of vehicles in the already turning-into-sea like roads. The rainfall was so heavy that the visibility on the road was considerably reduced. Turning back took me another hour to reach Andheri. Countless stories like these flooded on Twitter.

2. Airport Operations were shut temporarily as the visibility was really low. A spokesperson for MIAL (Mumbai International Airport Limited) told us, “Mumbai Airport runway operations were suspended from 9:12AM to 9:31AM due to heavy rain. Flight departures are currently delayed by 20 mins. British Airways BA135 had to be diverted to Hyderabad and SpiceJet SG8701 had to be diverted to Ahmedabad. Thankfully no cancellations as of now.”

The spokesperson updated us that operations at the airport have resumed as normal at 09:31 am. Rains have led to delays of 30-45 mins for flights. There have been 5 go-arounds and 3 diversions.

3. Wall collapse. In last week’s madness, the wall collapse at Malad claimed many lives. In a repeat of that, a wall collapsed in the Andheri East area. It happened at the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation on Monday morning. One was injured in the Paper Box Industrial Estate wall collapse. Debris was cleared soon after and necessary follow up was taken.

4. Trains were delayed and all three lines were affected. A delay of 30-40 minutes was a minimum. Plus, the roofs were leaking. Sion, Andheri, Ghatkopar stations, etc were flooded. Thanks to that and to the rains, commute was majorly affected. Kaali Peelis were off the street, and the areas in which auto rickshaws run saw major refusal from rickshawalas to ply. Ola and Uber also didn’t offer much respite. Their surge rates were insanely high. But some people had to cave in. As reaching to a point of safety was more important than money.

5. Two boys lost their lives while playing in a ditch in Yadav Nagar. There are more unreported incidents that have wreaked havoc. People’s lives have been majorly affected. The warnings have come and people are suggested to stay indoors and safe.

The madness is going to get worse. Every time there is heavy rainfall, the city comes to its knees. Last time, there was a power outage in many parts of the city, too. At least not this time.

The cyclonic winds over the Arabian Sea are going to cause more rainfall and not only Mumbai but North-Konkan region have been put on red alert for the next 24 hours.

Mumbaikars, please stay safe and check social media for live updates in your area before venturing out. Stock up on supplies and plan your travel in and around the city carefully.
