Get Unhindered Valley Views From All Sides At Garbett Point, Just Two Hours Away From Mumbai!

Oh, how much we crave greenery! And come monsoon, the state’s green spaces come alive and have oodles of Vitamin Green for us to soak in. We are suckers for a change of pace and scenery (safely) and are ever on the lookout for hidden gems nearby.

To our joy, we came across a lovely spot which is approximately two hours away from Mumbai and has scenic views to offer. We are talking about Garbett Point, near Matheran. It is a green paradise, loved by trekkers and is also one helluva location.

The Garbett Plateau is 17 km away from Matheran; and is 8 km away from the Diskal village, which is the base village. The Garbett/Garbut Point is 5 km away from Matheran Railway Station. The plateau is a gorgeous vantage point, open from all sides. It offers unhindered valley views on one side and has a thick jungle on the other.
From the top you can soak in the views of the neighbouring mountains, waterfalls, and greenery. The sunrises and sunsets from here are breathtaking and you will be mesmerised. Surely one for the memory book!

People not only trek to Garbett, but then trek further to Matheran, which is a tad bit difficult. From the base village of Diksal, it takes about three to four hours to reach Garbett. You need patience and skill to accomplish this trek. Along the way you will spot a gorgeous man made lake of Dhom Dam, lush greenery and waterfalls. Trekkers have to walk along the perimeter of the lake and cross a fast-moving stream through the help of a rope during the monsoon season. During monsoon, the water is rough.

After the stream, comes a steep climb on a hillock to reach a nearby village of Sagachiwadi. Then, from the village too is a steep climb till the plateau. Once you reach Garbett plateau, be ready to soak in panoramic views of the abundant nature that surrounds you. From the plateau, there is a steep ascend that takes you to Garbett Point. The path to the point is quite narrow and on one side, there is a sheer drop. So be careful. Oh, and the view from there cannot be described in words!

You can choose to end your trek here or you can continue to head to Matheran, which is 5 km away from this point and is a long trail. The whole trip takes hours. There is also an alternate route from Garbett Point through a nearby village that will take you to Dasturi Naka. You can either go ahead to Matheran or head to Neral and then back to the city.
A few things during this trek you have to keep in mind is that there is no natural source of water along the trek so you have to carry your own. Food and snacks also you should carry. But please carry your trash back with you and do not litter. There are several local guides available at Diksal village that will take you to the top. Plus, there are many trek tours planned both from Mumbai and Pune.

Best time to visit: July to September
Getting there: Diksal village is near Karjat-Neral Road which is close to Bhivpuri Railway Station on the Central Railway line. Additionally, you can also drive down till the village but if you are not descending from the same route, it can be tricky. You can also take help of a local guide, which is a best practice. It is 66 km from Mumbai and 105 km from Pune.
