Mumbai Has A Gender Fluid Jewellery Corner Called Kaalon And We Are In Love

'Kaalon' comes from the Greek term Kalos which means all that is good and beautiful within. Their virtual cornerstone reads "We at Kaalon reckon that your beauty is skin deep. So here's a little something that will add a shade of romance to your innate allure". They have built their tribe with people of all the genders because gorgeous silver oxidised jewellery doesn't discriminate!

The little jewellery shop was born out of a hobby. The founder, Muskaan Fulwadhya, took all the compliments that she received on her personal jewellery collection that she wore to college every day and put it in a pop-up stall for the many college fests that Jai Hind hosted. And then another one and another one and another one after that.

The success of her pop-ups took her business online and there it has stayed for three years now. Her gender-no-bar jewellery is sourced from all over India; mainly Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata and Udaipur. And the best part is – it goes equally well with both jodhpuris and jeans.

The idea that jewellery is for women was never a part of Kaalon. According to the founder, men shying away from wearing jewellery or only popping by to pick something up for their moms or girlfriends was something that she wanted to change. She knocked the gender associations out of her jewellery and created an aesthetic space free of taboo and open to all.

Her motto is to not promise people beauty in exchange for a purchase, she just gives you pretty little trinkets that add to the innate beauty that you carry within (and really appreciates pictures that reflect the same in return).

Before the pandemic, every purchase came with sweet recommendations from the founder. Although, much like other businesses, Kaalon was struck on the books too because no matter how flattering septum rings or kadas are, they just don't do well with pyjamas.

Now since things are starting to look up and our real clothes are out of the closet again, we recommend you check out their Instagram for their beautiful ethnic and western collections but this time – not just for the moms and girlfriends.
