At The Southernmost Tip Of South Mumbai Lies A Still-Functional Prongs Lighthouse

While we sing — Yeh hai Bambai meri jaan; we are also thinking of many attractions this city of dreams has. Located at India’s west coast, Mumbai’s beauty lies in the sea which surrounds the city. Adding to its charm, stands Prongs Lighthouse! And we are here to take you on a historical journey of this lighthouse which dates back to 1874. Let’s go!

Standing tall at the Southernmost tip of South Mumbai, Prongs Lighthouse is one of the most well-known lighthouses of the city. Built in the year 1874 by Thomas Ormiston, this 144 feet high tower is visible from Colaba. Painted in three horizontal bands, red, white and black, the lighthouse gets full marks for the aesthetics.

Now, let’s take a deep dive into its history, shall we? Prongs Lighthouse used to be one of the few lighthouses equipped with a cannon to protect the bay from pirates. And not just that, it is one of the few offshore lighthouses in the world that is still staffed. Wow!

The lighthouse marks the entrance to Mumbai Harbour and replaced the on-shore Colaba Point Lighthouse whose traces are nowhere to be seen today. Prongs Lighthouse can be accessed on foot during low tides but only with prior permission. We highly recommend admiring this beautiful and historical lighthouse because why not!
