Andheri East Witnesses A Huge Spike In Cases, Is Vande Bharat Mission The Reason?

The city’s K-East ward, which comprises Vile Parle, Jogeshwari and Andheri East, has the most number of cases as compared to rest of the administrative wards. The total number of cases is close to 4000. There are many factors for this spike in cases in the area.

coronavirus

According to officials one of the reasons why Andheri East shows a sudden spike in cases could be due to the Vande Bharat mission. And the proximity of the area to the airport. Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner, told Mumbai Mirror, “Most foreign travellers are quarantined in hotels in K east ward of Andheri. The Seven Hills hospital is also in this ward. If a suspected Covid patient is admitted, the address shown by default is K east ward regardless of where the patient lives. Those figures are added to the ward list.”

Prashant Sapkale, assistant commissioner, K (east), stated to Mumbai Mirror, “Every day we are getting passengers from Vande Bharat, of whom 25 per cent live in this ward. We had identified 26 hotels for them where they spend seven days under quarantine after which they are tested and allowed to go. Many of them test positive and then we have to test hotel staff as well.”

COVID-19

Another reason for the spike in cases is the Marol Police Camp. At least 70 cases have been identified from this area. Police personnel work in containment zones in different areas then travel home. Many people have also been infected at the Seven Hills hospital, a COVID-19 treatment hub. The area is as it is one of the most populated places in the city.

As cases spike, we urge all citizens to wear masks and follow all social distancing norms while stepping out.
