62-YO Mom Makes Dawoodi Bohra And Other Ancient Indian Board Games & It’s Perfect For Family Time

Did you know there’s an ancient game called Dadu which is played by the Dawoodi Bohra community? Or say Kalodaan for that matter? Well, neither did we. But thanks to Sophie Johari, a Mumbai-based entrepreneur, the world is now learning the ropes of these and more ancient Indian board games.

During the pandemic, board games have been a hit and been off the shelves in no time. Games are a perfect way to engage and bond with the whole family. While we are fans of Ludo, Monopoly, Sequence and more, it is a delight to learn that there are more games out there as old as 1000 years that we can play.
Sophie, 62, under her brand SoSophie makes traditional Dawoodi Bohra board games like Dadu and Koaladaan. She makes each and everything by hand. And it takes her hours and days to make one set. How Sophie started making this game at home was also by chance. It was when her daughter had asked her to make a traditional board game for a friend’s wedding gift. And when that was a hit, she started receiving queries on social media.

Sophie has always had an inkling towards embroidery work and tailoring, which she picked up from her mom. Even after marriage, she continuously engaged in DIY dresses, frocks, embroidery work on cushions, etc. So, when the board games came into picture, the world became her fan.
Dadu is a strategic board game played by family members of all age groups. They are divided into two teams and the objective of the game is to cross all pieces to the opponent’s side. Koladaan is also an ancient game and has different sets of rules in different communities.

A set of Dadu and Koladaan here costs you Rs 3000, and individually a Dadu set costs Rs 2000 and Koladaan costs Rs 1500. Everything is customised and made by hand by Sophie. So far, she has catered to customers in Pakistan, Singapore, Italy, Canada, Australia and the US. In addition to these games, Sophie has also customised South Indian board games like Thaayam, Tablan; and even Pretwa which originated in Bihar.
