It Is Absolutely True That You Can Travel Across Kolkata Under Rs. 50!

We tell you, how we can cover Kolkata from pillar to post with just Rs 50 in your pocket.

One of the key things that we always keep in our mind, while travelling to a city, is the budget; whether you are a city dweller or a tourist. Kolkatans, however, don't really need to worry about that. The public transport connects every end of the city and allows you to travel cheap and with ease. Don't believe it? Well... we don't blame you, because neither did we, until we decided to try it ourselves. Travelling from North-end of Kolkata to the South-end, in just Rs 50; is something that you don't get to experience, often.

The origin of Kolkata Metro - Nawpara Station lies at the extreme north-end of the city and ends at Kavi Subhash (New Garia) Metro Station, which is located in the far South. If you were daring enough to cover this in a day (read: 25 kms); the GPS would time it at 3-4 hours. You'd have to book a cab, take a taxi or even a bus, which would burn a hole of atleast Rs 100 in your pocket. However, the Kolkata Metro charges you only Rs 25 and you reach your destination within 45 minutes.

Let me take you further up North to Kamrhati. This is the starting point for over 230 buses that ply on the city roads. Now, if you were to take a bus to Alipore Zoo (and we all know how difficult is it to get there), these buses come to our rescue. The estimated distance between Kamarhati and the zoo is a whooping 34 kms! If you are thinking about taking a cab, you might have to spend Rs 500 or more, for a one-way trip; but if you take the bus, you just have to buy a ticket for Rs 15. The best deal ever!

If you are a Mumbaikar, then you know exactly what we are talking about. We have the same criss-cross network of local trains that connect the city. The farthest townships in and around Kolkata are Kalyani Simanta, Gede, Shantipur, Bangaon, among others. If you were to travel from Kalyani Simanta (far up North) to Ballygunge, which is the heart of South Kolkata, you can either book a car which is going to weigh down your pockets; but one local train ride costs you only Rs 20. Yep, just as much as a packet of wafers would.

We have now established, that travelling across the City of Joy for Rs 50 is no myth, so the next time you plan to trip to Kolkata, no need to put your head into travelling expense. Kolkata is calling you out loud, waiting for your footsteps and to be discovered from your eyes.
