No More Toxic Waste! India’s First Biodegradable Plastic Invented By IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati has introduced the first biodegradable plastic in the country and we couldn’t be more proud.

The serious case of plastic pollution has been looming large over the world and is increasing in magnitude with every minute. For this reason, science is continuously experimenting with innovative ideas to try and diminish the adverse effects of pollution and toxic waste. Well, prepare yourself for some great news that will definitely restore your faith in the modern age.

IIT Guwahati has been successful in developing the nation’s first biodegradable plastic that will play an instrumental role in curbing the toxic waste from the society. Plastic has forever been an utter nuisance due to its non-biodegradable nature and has been steadily contributing to the accumulation of toxic waste, which will never decompose naturally. Owing to this disadvantage, the Government has been trying to reduce the usage of plastic but it is really difficult to control in such a huge population. This is why the scientists at IIT Guwahati have come with a more convenient solution that will help to combat the ill-effects of such a material.

The best thing about this invention is that it has been built using a homegrown, low-cost technology that does not involve a sky-high expenditure. The initiative was given a thumbs-up sign by The Times Of India and this biodegradable plastic is devoid of harmful chemicals. The project has been funded by The bio-based material will not only minimise pollution on a great level but also easily disintegrate into the soil and in turn, enhance its fertility. Kudos to IIT-G’s Centre Of Excellence - Sustainable Polymers for coming up with such a smart, effective solution that will save our planet in the long run!
