Go Beach Camping On Mousuni Island

Spend a peaceful weekend at a backpackers’ camp on this island.

If you’re planning a group trip, we recommend Izifiso’s backpackers’ camp on Mousuni Island near Namkhana. A small island attached to the Sundarbans delta, it was first developed by the British to transport salt and dry fish.

Getting There

Take the train from Sealdah to Namkhana from where you’ll cross the rivers Hatania Doania and Chinai. About 30 minutes later, you disembark on the banks of Chinai and head to camp, which is set up on Baliara, the island’s only beach.

Main Attractions

Mousuni Island boasts a mangrove area where you can experience forest life and explore the fishermen’s colony. A ride through the village will take you to BHEL’s stand-alone solar power plant. Afterwards, visit Salt, the extreme southern tip of the island, where salt was harvested once upon a time. Near Baliara, Kankramarir Chor is a must-visit for a bird-watching experience like no other.

In the evenings, villagers are invited to talk to visitors over campfire, and music and dance are pretty usual. Interact with the Santhals and learn about their ways of life, and how they’re surviving on an island that is sinking rapidly. In the day, you can go fishing with the fishermen into the deep sea – an adventure not for the fainthearted because the Bay of Bengal is no fairy tale!

If you want to stay shore side though, go beach cycling or take long walks. Don’t miss the sunrises and sunsets either – they’ll blow your mind.
