Goa is great for its sandy beaches, old Portuguese architecture, churches, incredible seafood and much more. But if you want to experience Goa as the locals do, then you need to head to Mapusa market. The market is brimming with people and vendors trying to sell spices, household items and bread. If you want to savour traditional Goan sweets, there is only one place to go and that is Pascoal Bakery in Mapusa.

Inside the maze, this little shop is run by two ladies whose swift actions are like a ninja. The small shop has all the local confectionaries like small and big Bolinhas that are round biscuits made with semolina, sugar, butter and coconut. It’s best had dunked in tea. The Dos is a chickpea flour-based sweet that is again flavoured with sugar and coconut and cut into squares. My favourite has to be the Pinag that are small rolls and are dark brown in colour. It is made with jaggery and coconut that lends its distinct taste and texture.

What’s more? Well, they also keep Guava Cheese that is made in house and Boat that is similar to Pinag but a more cakery version and Batk that is similar to Bolinhas but a more cakery version. Apart from this, another unique sweet is Dodal. It is made with coconut milk, rice flour, jaggery and nuts. It is all mixed together and cooked until it all thickens and then chilled. It is similar to a set custard and a pudding. Intrigued? You can also find Chocolate Biscuits and Nankhatai that will go well with tea time and also make for great gifts to take back home.
