Delhi does not have the best reputation when it comes to road safety, and over a month back, only a miracle could have alleviated the city’s gruesome traffic woes. So the miracle happened, and in a matter of 15 days after the implementation of the amended Motor Vehicles Act, the rate of compliance with road rules has shown tremendous improvements. The new laws (coupled with the fear of hefty challans) had such a drastic impact on the city's population that latest reports suggest traffic challans have gone down by as much as 70 per cent since September 1.

Prior to the implementation of the new laws, traffic police in Delhi used to issue nearly 17,000 challans per day. The number has dropped to just above 4,500 challans after September 1. Along with the decrease in the number of traffic violations, there has also been a change in the pattern of breaches. Earlier, commercial vehicles used to form the bulk of total tickets issued, but there has been an impetus in the securing of neat paperwork by drivers and car owners following the implementation of the new laws. About 40 per cent of the violators stopped in the past week are two-wheeler riders, 25 per cent are private car drivers, while the rest are those operating commercial vehicles and auto rickshaws.

Stringent traffic laws have also brought about a significant change in the number of vehicles plying on the city roads, decreasing the number of snarls at interjections to about 30 per cent. Seems like Delhi has found the magic wand that was needed to mitigate its traffic woes completely.
