Spend A Day Exploring The History Of The Beautiful Lake & Ancient Structures In Hauz Khas!

Ever wanted to know about the history behind the ancient Hauz Khas Fort and the serene lake? Well, here it is.

If you've ever been to Hauz Khas Village, you would know that there is a beautiful lake and fort there, but do you know the history behind them? Well, neither did we, till we took a walk through the area and read up on the ancient site, visited by several locals and tourists alike.

The idea of the lake was inspired by the water reservoir at the Siri complex. It prompted Allauddin Khilji to build a lake that complimented the architecture around the present-day Hauz Khas Village. Built during the 1980s, this area is still used as a repository of alternative art, fashion and food.

When you walk through the fort, you will spot an L-shaped complex mushrooming around the area, which basically consists of a madrasa (a traditional Islamic centre of learning); dotted by pavilions and a tomb which stands in the centre, and was made during Firoz Shah Tuglaq's time.

A little ahead, you will see small domed arches, linking the paths between the construction surrounding the village of Taradabad and the two verticals. There's also a small mosque towards the northern end and a wall that was built so that people could look outside from the reservoir; it is called the Wall of Qibla. Firoz Shah Tughla was known as a liberal ruler, so his work of art is credited and praised as an architectural development in the country during his rule.

Even though the water reservoir has seen some bad days, filled with algae and a lot of trash, now it has been restored with the help of the local residents and municipal department. Very often, you'll find the area thronged by fitness enthusiasts and even photographers who love taking pictures of the sunset at the beautiful lake.

The lake adjoins the Deer Park in Safdurjung and you can easily take a 10-minute walk and reach the park in no time. Here you'll find people enjoying picnics, playing sports, and running around the park. It makes for a perfect spot to spend your Sunday and hang out with your fam bam!

So, how about walking down this history lane at the Hauz Khas Village this weekend?
