Ditch Himachal This Summer & Take These Lesser Known Treks In Arunachal Pradesh Instead!

For those who like to take the road less travelled.

If you like the mountains, you probably like trekking too, especially through the highs and lows of the lush, snow-capped Himalayas. But, over the last couple of years, due to the massive influx of tourists in mountainous regions across north India, there has been massive deterioration in these areas. In times like these, when trekking in the hills of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh has lost its erstwhile charm, there is a dire need for hikers to find alternative treks in other parts of the country. The good news is that we’ve scooped out some of the best unbeaten treks in the lush green valleys of Arunachal Pradesh. Check them out!

1. Mechuka La Trek

Mechuka is a small hill town located on the Indo-Sino border that is blessed with expansive landscapes that boast of riverines, barrows, and grazing lands. The village is a heavenly place with largely untouched beauty. The hike to the town starts from Bumjipanga bridge and involves four to five hours of trekking on an elevated mountain range. The trek is slightly easy, but the rewards are as magical as any trek in the Himalayas.

2. Dewakota Trek

Dewakota is a pristine hill town in Arunachal that is only accessible by foot. The word 'Dewakota' literally translates to - land of the gods - and the town sits high on a plateau. It has immense religious significance for the locals and the base town for the trek is 40 kms away from the destination. The trail has gushing rivers on both sides and dense mountains that are just majestic to walk through. It takes three days to complete the hike with moderate steep throughout.

3. Ziro Valley Trek

Ziro Valley has achieved nationwide popularity these days because of the renowned Ziro Music Festival. The increased influx of music listeners in the valley has also shed some light on the remarkable treks it boasts. One of the most fascinating hikes amongst these is the climb from Ziro Valley to Talley Valley. Spewing with resplendent waterfalls, exotic bird species, rivulets, and rhododendron forests, this two-day trek is one of the finest ways to experience the majestic beauty of Arunachal Pradesh.

4. Mago Trek

Nestled in the majestic Tawang Valley, Mago is a quaint village located at a height of 12,500 feet. The trek to the village begins at Roh and passes through a trail of coniferous mountains and yak huts as the Tawang-chu river flows by. It takes about three to four days of steep climbing to reach Mago village from Roh, which is why this trek is recommended for seasoned hikers only.

5. Thembang Trek

The way to Thembang is long and tiring but the views in sight are some of the most majestic you will ever see. This eight-day trek through the Dirang and Sangti Valleys is speckled with lush villages, cobblestones engraved with Buddhist chants, and panoramic vantage points is a real treat for every nature lover. Thembang itself is going to be dotted as a world heritage site by UNESCO soon, and you may want to visit it at least once in your life.
