Restaurants Around Jama Masjid Which Are Better Than Karim’s

While some places are popular, some are pure hidden gems – but you haven’t experienced Jama Masjid food, till you’ve tried these!

Al Jawahar For Chicken Jahangiri

Bang opposite Jama Masjid Gate No 1, the place is next door to Karim’s, and is giving its neighbour a tough competition. Some say it is better, and we totally agree to it. While most people go here for its delectable biryani, we recommend you try the Chicken Jahangiri to fall completely in love with this place.

Price: Rs 230 for Half Plate

Rehmatullah Hotel For Sheermal

After digging into the spicy Chicken Jahangiri, we were looking for something sweet, so we went to Rehmatullah Hotel for some iconic Mughlai sweet bread - Sheermal. The hotel initially sold only rotis, but now has a fancy-looking restaurant, adjacent to the old shop (that’s where you get the Sheermal). Just a few shops ahead of Al Jawahar, we had some really fresh Sheermal here.

Price: Rs 20 each

Haji Mohamad Hussain For Fried Chicken

About 600 meters from Jama Masjid, on the Matia Mahal Road, we spotted a shop run by an old man, who was chopping chicken with a cleaver behind his huge kadhai. In the same kadhai, sometime later, he made some very juicy and crispy fried chicken that left us craving for more. Don’t miss this one, when visiting Dilli 6, for it will make you forget KFC, we promise.

Price: Rs 400

Aslam’s Chicken Corner For Butter Chicken

Another must-try in Jama Masjid is Aslam’s Butter Chicken, and this one, we tell you, is not your regular butter chicken. Cooked on a sigadi, the chicken is tossed in some yoghurt-based gravy and then in lots and lots of melted butter. All of this is served with Rumali Roti, Raita and some salad.

WH Tip: Make sure you forget that something like a calorie-count even exists, before you get here.
Price: 200 for Half Plate

Babu Bhai Kebab Wale For Seekh Kabab

About 100 meters ahead of Aslam’s, on the same road - is this tiny kebab shop that sells buff kebabs for 10 bucks only! The soft kebabs are served with a spicy chutney and some onion and radish salad.

Price: Rs 10 each

Haji Shabrati Nahari Wale For Nahari Kulcha

Hands down the best Nahari you will eat in Jama Masjid! Established in 1957, this old shop has gained popularity in recent times and for good reasons only. The soft mutton of their Nahari just falls apart with a gentle touch, and we fell in love with it in just one bite.

Price: Rs 50 for a plate

Sheeren Bhawan For Rasmalai

Perhaps the only shop in Jama Masjid where you will find Rasmalai, this place is totally worth a visit. What makes the Rasmalai here different is the extra soft texture and the sweetness. The milk has a strong flavour of cardamom which makes the sweet dish very refreshing.

Price: Rs 25 per piece

Rizk Kashmiri Wazwan For Namkeen Chai and Lavasa

At the end of our gastronomical journey, on our way back to the Masjid, we spotted a very interesting shop. Some of you might not know, but Jama Masjid has a few Kashmiri eateries which offer authentic Wazwani food. We stopped by the Rizk Kashmiri Wazwan, where we ordered a cup of Namkeen Chai - a delicacy in Kashmiri culture. The taste, for obvious reasons, is completely different from your regular tea, and as the name suggests, it’s slightly salty. It was served along with a piece of Lavasa - crispy bread made in tandoor.

Price: Rs 20 with Lavasa

We were too full to try their other Kashmiri offerings, but we are definitely going on a Kashmiri food trail around Jama Masjid, very soon!
After all the eating and walking in the cramped lanes, we ended our day with a majestic view of the Jama Masjid, during sunset.
