On A Vegan Diet? Study Finds That Avoiding Meat & Dairy Products Can Lead To Weaker Bones!
As the world is becoming more health-conscious by the day, people are switching to healthier choices and more so to Veganism. And honestly, even we were of the notion that becoming a vegan will reap the benefits of good health until a study broke out that it ultimately takes a toll on our body in the long run. Read on to know more!
According to research conducted by the experts at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, following a diet with zero intakes of meat and dairy could actually harm your bone health.
Researchers came to this conclusion when they analysed the bones of 36 vegans and 36 non-vegans using ultrasound and the results were quite amusing! On average, those who followed a vegan diet had lower ultrasound values than those consuming meat and dairy products, indicating poorer bone health.
To make the study more detail-oriented, researchers also collected the blood and urine samples of all the participants. On observation, they found that a combination of vitamins A and B6, calcium, magnesium, selenoprotein P, omega-3 fatty acids, lysine, leucine, iodine, thyroid-stimulating hormone and α-Klotho protein were present only in the reports that indicated good bone health.
While following a vegetarian or a vegan diet has its own share of benefits too, BfR president Andreas Hensel said in a statement, “People are turning to a vegan diet not only due to compassion for animals and awareness of environmental problems but also for health benefits. Scientific evidence suggests that a vegan or vegetarian diet may protect against many chronic diseases, for example, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, or cancer. However, a vegan diet was found to be associated with lower bone mineral density, which is associated with higher fracture risk, compared to omnivores.”
