Life in the city is not just fast and monotonous, but also highly deceiving. Take art for example, even though we can access every piece of it on the tip of our fingernails we’re divulged with the same acts that everybody else is watching. Thus, most art (or its diversity) remains elusive to you until you reach out to it. But, now the Railway Ministry of India has found an ingenious solution to this conundrum by bringing the art to the people who cannot seek it out. Recently, the ministry revamped 65 art station in the country with beautiful paintings and wall murals, including New Delhi Railway Station.

The beautification process has infused a fresh breath of liveliness into the New Delhi Railway Station that once seemed to have lacked lustre and shabby. The newfound beauty of the station becomes apparent even with a passing look over the station’s outer walls and this allurement become more conspicuous as you enter the main building. Inside the premises of the newly painted edifice, everything from ceiling to frontal walls are filled with paintings and murals boasting colourful designs and patterns. The walls of the ticket counter are juxtaposed with a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, while overhead paintings showcase main attractions and landmarks around Delhi, like Taj Mahal and Qutub Minar. Paintings that reflect on the city’s culture and lifestyle are not amiss as well. The station is cleaner and brighter too with modern amenities like LED lights, LCD displays, and functional escalators.

The beautification of NDLS also includes cleaner toilets, better parking facilities, new benches, and improved waiting halls. Travellers passing through the station also seem to be appreciating it shedding its old skin for a new, cooler, and more efficient look. It is safe to say that the ministry’s efforts in bringing the art to the people were successful. Our only hope is that the travellers to will contribute in keeping this beauty intact by appreciating every piece of art installed there and making individual efforts to keep the station clean.
