First Look: Gurgaon Gets Its First Speakeasy Microbrewery And They Have A Scotch Ale For You!

Opened in Sector 29, Gurgaon; it not only offers freshly brewed beer but also some deliciously crafted cocktails.

Bringing an underground speakeasy format from the war-zone of 1940s to Sector 29, Gurugram, Decode Underground has made way for those who want to have the best of everything. From carefully crafted cocktails to some deliciously brewed scotch-ales, and a menu that would compliment every palate, it is here to take you on a journey from the past, aboard a train from the present. 

What’s It All About?

Speakeasy bars came into existence during World War I, when alcohol was not allowed to be served openly. Therefore, underground bars were opened, which would offer a wide range of cocktails to customers, at places that would be off the radar. Bringing, one such bunker (figuratively) to the National Capital Region, Decode Underground is a fine mix of the old and new. Enter, and the the place has framed photos from that era; a wall dedicated to war strategies depicting plane and war-ship movements. 

Spanning across two floors, each has separate bars, kitchen and its own microbrewery section. While the ground floor gives you a peep into the World War Era, the terrace gives you a beautiful panoramic view of Sector 29 market. 

What’s Cooking?

The menu is an amalgamation of flavours and a pleasant surprise, not only for the palate but your eyes as well. Each dish has been put together delicately to please your taste-buds and surprise you as well. You can try the Red Harissa Marinated Money Bag, or the Thai Style Chicken Tikka; and as the name suggests, it will be a carnival of flavours in your mouth. 

However, three dishes really caught our attention: the Uttapam Waffle (an uttapam base served with chicken), Mutton Taka Tak Slurpy Joe Bao (a steamed bao served with mutton filling) and in desserts, The Wishing Tree (a beautifully created chocolate garden with a candy-floss tree and different kinds of Indian desserts and ice cream).

Cocktails! The bar has a wide range that has offers not only the good ol’ cocktails but also new age concoctions. The mixologist has really gone a step further to take you back in time with the presentation and theatrics. For those, who like the concept of going a bit further into history, they also have a Decoding Machine from the era. If you are able to “decode the drink”, it’s on the house! 

“It’s not for the classes, but for masses”, says co-founder Piyush Jain. Well… seeing that there is something for everyone, we couldn’t agree more!
