Delhi Metro Allocates Separate Toilets For Transgender Passengers From Today Onwards!

347 separate toilets being allocated across all Delhi Metro stations for the transgender community is truly a step in the right direction.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has recently introduced separate toilets for transgender passengers who commute via the Delhi Metro, ensuring them unhindered access to toilets across all stations in the city. These toilets were first allocated to only specially-abled individuals, but the DMRC felt the need to do so for the trans community as well in order to make them feel safer.

There are 347 separate toilets allocated to persons with disabilities, which can now also be used by the trans community. A DMRC official told the Hindu, “In its efforts to provide safe space and prevent gender discrimination against trans persons, the DMRC has designated these existing toilets only for ‘Divyangjan’ (specially-abled) to be accessible for transgenders too.”

Additionally, any trans person can also use other toilets as per their self-identified gender. Later, officials will also work towards separate public toilet facilities in dedicated locations in its upcoming Phase IV project.

Section 22 of the Transgender Persons (Protection Of Rights) Act, 2019 mandates adequate welfare measures for transgenders at all public spaces and buildings. So needless to say, these new facilities are definitely a step in the right direction.
