Delhi Airport Is About To Get An Elevated Taxiway By 2022!

An elevated cross taxiway at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport will be ready by the end of next year.

India’s first Elevated Cross Taxiway (ECT) at Delhi Airport is all set to be constructed by December 2022. Nearly 60 per cent of the work has been completed according to information from the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the operator of the facility.

After its completion, the 2.1-kilometre long taxiway will help relieve congestion at the airport, ameliorate the circulation paths of aircrafts, and reduce approximately 55000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Once this taxiway is ready, planes at T3 will have to only travel for two kilometres to take off from the runway, which will help avoid flights getting delayed. After the commission of this new elevated taxiway, planes will also be able to leave the runway sooner, which in turn, will let incoming flights land faster.

Additionally, as part of the airport expansion project, DIAL is carrying out the integration of the departure and arrival terminals of T1, as well as constructing a new T1 Apron.

DIAL is also constructing a 4.4-kilometre-long fourth runway parallel to Runway 11/29 on the southern side, which will increase air traffic capacity and help reduce carbon emissions. This will also make Delhi Airport the first in India to have four operational runways.
