Attention Fart-Ists: Surat Is Hosting India’s FIrst Fart Competition!

Prizes will be given to those whose farts are the loudest, longest, and most musical.

If you’re going up on stage to perform in front of a microphone and an expectant audience, it’s fair to assume that you’re going to be facing the mic, right? Well, there’s an unconventional competition that is looking to turn that assumption on its head. India’s first farting contest, What The Fart (WTF), will be held in Surat on September 22, 2019, and will be offering prizes to those whose farts are the loudest, the longest, and the most musical. Are you up for the challenge?

This one-of-a-kind event is the brainchild of 48-year-old Surat resident Yatin Sangoi, and his partner Mul Sanghvi. Sangoi said that the inspiration for the event struck him when he farted in the middle of watching a movie with his family, and one of his family members remarked that if there was a contest for such a thing, he would surely have won.

However, there is a deeper social message behind this seemingly frivolous movement to #FreeTheFart. Sangoi said that the main idea is to remove the social stigma associated with passing wind, something which people used to do quite freely even as recently as 20-25 years ago, as it’s actually one of the healthiest human body functions.

Each participant will be given 60 seconds to impress judge Devang Raval, a stand-up comedian, while a local doctor may join the judging panel too. Although winners will receive trophies and revel in the title of ‘padshah’, serious prize money (to the tune of cash prizes between Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 15,000) might be at stake too, if a sponsor can be roped in.

With over 40 participants from all over India having already signed up to take part this time, Sangoi envisions holding the fart fest on a bigger scale, revealing his aim to take it to other cities, and even adding a burping contest!
