City Secrets: Shop For Everything From Obattu To Chutney Pudi At This Basavanagudi Store!

Stop by Srinivasa Condiments Store in Basavanagudi for local snacks, chutney pudi and fryums.

Recently on one of our trips to Basavanagudi, we decided to stop by (the legendary) Srinivasa Stores. Started by Subbamma, a widow who went from home to home selling local snacks like Chakli, Nipattu (our favourite) and other condiments, her products became so popular that she set up a store. Fast-forward to the present, it is one of the busiest stores in Basavanagudi. And no, they don’t have a chain of stores selling products. It is very much the hole-in-the-wall shop that was in the beginning. 

Probably the area’s best-kept secret, the store is always crowded, even when we happened to visit it late on a Friday morning. You can’t just laze and talk to the owner; do your research on what they sell, and have in mind what you want to order before you reach the store because that’s how full of people it always is.

Apart from snacks like Nipattu, Khara Nipattu (spicy version), we recommend Gooseberry Thokku (ask for a sample, it’s yum!) and the Holige. If you love fryums, then there are plenty of options between flavours like onion, garlic and even jackfruit. If you are into cooking, ask for Kodulbale Hittu (readymade dough with which you can make Kodulbale at home) and other ready-made flour mixes.
