In an attempt to encourage more electric vehicles Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has proposed to install electric charging stations for motor vehicles. The request has been made to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) and the electric vehicle (EV) charging units will cater to over 9000 electric vehicles registered in Bangalore city.

BESCOM will install the EV charging units in 11 stations across Bangalore based on feasibility, parking space at the metro stations and also the areas which have a higher density of electric vehicles. The transport department and BESCOM will be co-ordinating for the same to ensure that the stations are accessible for the users. The charging units are to be installed by Delta Electronics India and the focus will be to cater the two-wheelers as four-wheelers take up space in the metro station premises. There will be 10 DC charging units to 1 AC units; the former is faster and takes 1.5 hours to charge a car whereas the latter takes six hours to charge a car and 60 minutes to charge a bike. With this initiative, we are hoping that commuters use public transport more and switch to electric vehicles to avoid traffic pollution.
