The charming town of Srirangapatnam might have been on your bucket list for a while, but have you heard of the nearby local treasure that’s Karighatta Hills? Located at the meeting point of Cauvery and Lokapavani at a staggering altitude of almost 3,000 metres above sea level, you know the view from the top is a marvellous sight. The ancient hill lined with boulders and scrubby bushes along the path has earned its moniker ‘Black Hill’ from the local grass called Dharba Hullu, which turns black after drying in the scorching summer sun. in

When you reach the heritage hill, trek out through the odd 450 steps leading to the summit. You will find lush gooseberry and tamarind trees dotting the hillside covered in littered with rocks of every size and shape. If the summer heat has you shying away from the tiring workout, drive through the circuitous route winding around the hill and watch the sights on the way too. What awaits at the top is well worth the trouble. Karighatta’s famous temple opens its wooden doors to the sanctum sanctorum dedicated to Lord Srinivasa or Karigirivasa, a divine form of Vishnu. The distinct Dravidian architecture is evident in the build of the temple as well as the carvings of the idol.

But what brings throngs of tourists to Karighatta is the remarkable viewpoint sitting atop the hill. With Srirangapatnam at a stone’s throw and Mysore just 26 kms away, you are bound to be left speechless by the panorama waiting at the end of your trek. The elevated plateau is the perfect vantage point to look out to the two rivers melting into one as they flow across the plain. Time your visit to the late afternoon and you will find endless shots of the blushing sunset setting the skies ablaze. When there’s so much to see just three hours away from the city, you can plan a trip right this weekend. Chop chop!
