You could spend decades in the old city of Bangalore and never learn all its hidden secrets. One such secret lies deep in the bowels of the earth at Hulimavu. A subject of great mystery, the Hulimavu Shiva is built within a 2,000-year-old rock, though the temple itself is believed to be only 4 or 5 centuries old. From the outside, the temple may not seem like much, a tiny gopuram sitting at the top. But as you descend into the depths, you can see interesting murals lining its walls. The low ceiling of the cave will have you stooping low as you walk farther in.

At the centre of the structure is the lord of the temple, the shiva ling, with Devi and Ganesh flanking its sides. Hop on to the other side and you will find the ancient dhyana mantapa. The sloping roof is barely 4 feet high in certain spots, but devotees have repeatedly experienced a divine vibration while meditating within its serene walls. The temple even has a shrine to a saint who meditated and attained samadhi in its premises. Pay your respects to the idols and experience the tranquillity in the natural cave.
